Could inattentional blindness be a threat to your safety?

On Behalf of | Dec 14, 2021 | Personal Injury |

There are various things that could affect your health and safety on the road, including the actions of other drivers. Distracted driving is a serious issue that impacts many drivers, and it significantly increases the chance of an accident. Distracted driving is often the result of phone use while operating a vehicle, but it can include anything that takes a driver’s attention from the task at hand.

Distraction is a problem, but inattentional blindness is also a major, less familiar, concern. Like distracted driving, inattentional driving can lead to serious accidents and harm to others. Drivers are often unaware they are experiencing this, and they may not be cognizant of how dangerous it can be. When experiencing inattentional blindness, one may not see hazards that are obvious. Each driver is responsible for his or her actions, even if they are unintentional.

Perceptional blindness

Inattentional blindness is psychological lack of attention that is not the result of a deficit or defect. This means a person can see a hazard in the road ahead, such as stopped traffic, and not truly process that information or react to it appropriately. It is not necessarily the direct result of any type of distraction, but it can happen as a result of fatigue, loss of focus and more. Drivers can reduce their chance of experiencing this by taking the following steps:

  • Minimize distractions as much as possible, including keeping the phone out of reach while driving.
  • Pay attention to surroundings while operating the vehicle, including other vehicles and potential hazards ahead.
  • Read road signs and do everything possible to adhere to the rules of the road.

Attentive and cautious driving can make a significant impact in reducing the chance of inattentional blindness. If a driver caused the accident that left you injured as a result of his or her lack of focus or other type of negligence, you have legal options available to you.

Holding liable parties accountable

If you are suffering after a car accident you believe was the fault of another party, you would be wise to learn about how you can seek justice and fight for your recovery. The Missouri civil justice system provides you the opportunity to hold liable parties accountable for your pain and suffering. The personal injury claims process is time-sensitive, and your quick action can make a difference in the outcome of your case.
